2012 KTM 990 Duke R Review

THE ALPHA ANIMAL

The totally single-minded "R" version of the Super Duke is the flagship model of KTM's Naked Bike range in MY2012. Rated at a plentiful 125hp, the newly homologated LC8 V-twin engine delivers a solid punch and incomparable liveliness. The sharper trellis frame makes for maximum agility with its sporting “R” geometry and only nine kilograms of weight. The special “R” chassis ensures a high-resolution feedback about the road surface with its precisely adjustable WP steering damper and top quality suspension components.

First rate equipment like the machined, black anodized triple clamps, radial brake and clutch levers or the high quality Brembo brakes with radial four-pot front callipers elevate this Superbike among the Naked Bikes and ensure intuitive operation. Massive

2012 KTM 450 EXC Review

450 EXC: THE BENCHMARK

The 450 EXC can justifiably claim to be the most widely ridden bike in enduro sport and a serial winner in the E2 World Championship. The top dog has been revamped and slimmed down in practically every aspect - from the frame to the electronic injection and the engine management system to the material selection. Above all, the new chassis and redesigned OHC engine widen the 450 EXC's lead over the competition by a further bike length. Extremely light, supremely agile and endless power - that's what winners look like.

With the 450 EXC there isn’t a terrain or terra firma it can’t tackle. When the dirt ends, there’s no better solution than a street-legal EXC. Trails connected by pavement, no problem. Trails filled with different passages, rocks and slippery logs and roots, no problem. Street legal has never been so versatile and fun.

2012 KTM 450 EXC Features and Benefits

NOW EVEN MORE ERGONOMIC

BODYWORK

The 450 EXC's new bodywork with the very slim seat and spoiler lines, plus excellent contact points, perfects the bike's ergonomics, making handling even simpler and more precise. The longer rear fender protects the rider even more effectively from swirled up stones.

NOW WITH EVEN MORE PERFORMANCE

NEW ENGINE

With the 450 EXC's newly developed engine, KTM engineers have created a new dimension: The power unit has been redesigned from scratch and is now more compact, lighter and more powerful than before. Reduced reciprocating weight and a balancer shaft minimise vibration.

NEW EFI/EMS

The newly developed Keihin engine management system with electronic fuel injection ensures spontaneous responsiveness from the engine. Various engine characteristics can be activated with an optional map select switch.

NEW OIL CIRCUIT

The 450 EXC's new engine is equipped with a common oil circuit for engine and transmission, and two oil pumps. A pressure pump lubricates the engine, while a suction pump draws oil from the crankcase, using it to lubricate the transmission and the clutch. At the same time and in conjunction with a steel diaphragm, negative pressure arises in the casing, which boosts the engine power.

NEW BALANCER SHAFT

The 450 EXC's new, laterally integrated balancer shaft not only eliminates vibration, but also serves as the drive for the water pump. This intelligent multi-functionality contributes to the compactness and low weight of the 450 EXC's new engine.

NEW ENGINE CASE

The 450 EXC's new engine case weighs almost 2 kg (4 lb.) less than its predecessor, although it offers better resistance to damage due to stone impact or falls. This has been achieved by using a high-strength, elastic aluminium alloy and changing from sand-casting to die-casting.

NEW CRANKSHAFT

When designing the new crankshaft on the 450 EXC, KTM engineers focussed on reducing the reciprocating weight. Thanks to the new, lighter connecting rod and the new, lighter piston, they managed to achieve minimum vibration, while maximising engine-speed strength.

NEW CYLINDER AND PISTON

The 450 EXC's cylinder has been further developed especially for the new engine configuration. The new, 15 % lighter forged piston minimises reciprocating weight and optimises durability at high engine speeds. New, nitrided piston rings ensure highest levels of resistance to wear.

NEW CYLINDER HEAD

All ports and the combustion chamber have been redesigned in the OHC cylinder head of the 450 EXC's new engine. The new camshaft actuates four valves via lightweight rocker arms, with high-quality titanium valves being used on the intake side.

NEW CLUTCH

The 450 EXC's newly developed clutch, with a robust steel cage and transmission-friendly back-damping, makes use of a spring washer for the first time instead of the customary conical springs, hence substantially reducing the operating force. The hydraulic actuation mechanism from Brembo® facilitates sensitive modulation of the clutch.

NEW SILENCER

The 450 EXC's new, improved silencer not only offers greater volume and a new design, it also reduces noise levels to the stricter standards of the future.

NOW WITH AN EVEN MORE SUPERIOR CHASSIS

NEW FRAME

The completely revamped frame made from high-quality chrome-molybdenum steel is characterised by even greater lateral stiffness. Furthermore, it is even better at absorbing jolts introduced by the suspension system, whereby the simple handling and comfort of the 450 EXC have been further optimised.

NEW SWINGARM, NEW PDS, NEW SETTING

The 450 EXC's new, lighter, cast aluminium swingarm accommodates the shock absorber more centrally, in order to load the swing arms more evenly. The new, 7 mm (0.28 in) longer PDS shock absorber with adjustable rebound and high/low-speed compression damping, and a new setting is installed more flatly, so providing even more progression.

TELESCOPIC FORK, NEW SETTING

The 450 EXC is equipped with the latest WP upside-down fork with wider adjustment ranges and a new setting. The sensitive responsiveness and outstanding damping of the open-cartridge fork with 48 mm (1.89 in) outer tubes are a perfect complement for the 450 EXC's simple handling and precision.

NEW WHEELS

Practically unbeatable in terms of weight and stability, the new wheels have CNC-machined hubs, Excel rims, zinc/nickel-coated spokes and aluminium nipples. They reduce the unsprung and gyroscopic masses, hence bolstering the simple handling of the 450 EXC.

• The same design as the KTM factory bikes thanks to Six Days graphics, orange powder-coated frame, orange anodised triple clamps, orange anodised handlebars and anthracite anodised silencer

OPTIMUM ERGONOMICS

BODYWORK

The new 350 EXC-F's bodywork with the very slim seat and spoiler lines, plus excellent contact points, perfects the bike's ergonomics, making handling even simpler and more precise. The long rear fender protects the rider very effectively from swirled up stones.

HANDLING OF A 250

FRAME

The new 350 EXC-F's lightweight frame made from high-quality chrome-molybdenum steel is distinguished by an extremely high level of lateral stiffness. It is also excellent at absorbing jolts introduced by the suspension system, whereby the playful handling and comfort of the 350 EXC-F have been further optimised.

SWINGARM, PDS

The new 350 EXC-F's lightweight cast aluminium swingarm accommodates the WP shock absorber almost centrally, in order to load the swing arms more evenly. The PDS shock absorber with adjustable rebound and high/low-speed compression damping works with high progression, in spite of the direct linking.

TELESCOPIC FORK

The new 350 EXC-F is equipped with the latest WP upside-down fork with wide adjustment ranges. The sensitive responsiveness and outstanding damping of the open-cartridge fork with 48 mm (1.89 in) outer tubes are a perfect complement for the 350 EXC-F's playful handling and precision.

WHEELS

Practically unbeatable in terms of weight and stability, the new wheels have CNC-machined hubs, new black-anodised rims from Giant, black zinc/nickel-coated spokes and ultra-light aluminium nipples. They reduce the unsprung and gyroscopic masses, hence boosting the playful handling of the new 350 EXC-F.

PERFORMANCE OF A 450

ENGINE

The new 350 EXC-F's compact, state-of-the-art four-stroke engine excels with an extremely wide usable rev range and the performance of an engine with much greater displacement. A laterally positioned balancer shaft, which acts as the drive for both timing chain and water pump, eliminates the vibration typical of this model type.

VALVE TRAIN

In the cylinder head with two overhead camshafts, four titanium valves are actuated by extremely lightweight, carbon-coated cam levers. This elaborate valve train, the ultra-light pistons and the new 350 EXC-F's extremely short-stroke engine facilitate speeds of up to 13,000 1/min.

BALANCER SHAFT

The balancer shaft not only eliminates vibration, but also acts as an intermediate shaft for the valve train and as the drive for the water pump. This intelligent multi-functionality makes a key contribution to the compactness and low weight of the new 350 EXC-F's engine.

CRANKSHAFT

When designing the crankshaft on the new 350 EXC-F, KTM engineers focussed on a reduction in the reciprocating weight and fine adjustment of the rotating masses. In this way, they managed to combine minimum vibration with an outstanding free-revving nature and optimum traction.

LUBRICATION SYSTEM

The new 350 EXC-F's engine is equipped with two oil pumps. A pressure pump lubricates the engine and clutch and cools the ignition, while a suction pump draws oil from the crankcase, using it to lubricate the transmission. At the same time, negative pressure arises in the casing, which provides an additional boost to engine power.

EMS

The Keihin engine management system with electronic fuel injection ensures spontaneous responsiveness and maximum performance from the engine. Various engine characteristics can be activated with an optional map select switch.

CLUTCH

The 350 EXC-F's newly developed clutch, with a robust steel cage and transmission-friendly back-damping, makes use of a spring washer for the first time instead of the customary conical springs, hence substantially reducing the operating force. The hydraulic actuation mechanism from Brembo® facilitates sensitive modulation of the clutch.

TRANSMISSION

The six-gear transmission on the new 350 EXC-F has been designed especially to match the characteristics of the 350cc engine and meet the demands of enduro sport, excelling with its precise and easy shifting.

SILENCER

The new 350 EXC-F's silencer featuring a special Six Days coating, reduces noise levels to the stricter standards of the future with its large volume.

WITH ELECTRIC STARTER

ELECTRIC STARTER

The new 350 EXC-F is equipped with both a kickstarter and an electric starter. The drive for the electric starter is integrated into the generator cover instead of the engine case, so the bike can be converted into a pure kickstarter simply by replacing the generator cover.

2011 KTM 990 Super Duke

In the form of the 990 Super Duke, KTM has not only reinvented the sporty naked bike, but also opened up a completely new dimension to motorcycle riding. The Super Duke combines a relaxed sitting position with merciless performance, high levels of functionality with a dynamic riding experience and high-tech with straightforward suitability for everyday use. It rewards hitting the gas with commitment thanks to its state-of-the-art V2 engine and perfectly balanced chassis with unlimited riding pleasure and supremacy at the local track.

2011 KTM 990 Super Duke Features

Dynamic cornering fun

Frame and swingarm

The 990 Super Duke's tubular space frame made from thin-walled chrome-molybdenum steel tubing with a bolted-on, light alloy subframe only weighs 9.5 kg (20.9 lb.), yet it impresses with exemplary torsional stiffness. The 575 mm (22.64 in) swingarm with conical profiles contributes plenty of mechanical grip.

Suspension Elements

Thanks to multiple setting options, the upside-down telescopic fork and the directly connected shock absorber from WP Suspension allow optimum individual adjustment of the chassis to suit the respective operational use of the versatile 990 Super Duke.

Radial brake

More than adequate deceleration is ensured in the 990 Super Duke by Brembo® brakes with the very finest components. On the front wheel, two radially-mounted four-piston brake calipers, pressured by a radial master cylinder, bite hard into 320 mm (12.6 in) discs.

High levels of functionality

Ergonomics, seat, cockpit

The 990 Super Duke's cockpit provides all the essential information without subjecting the rider to sensory overload. The seat supplies both pleasant comfort and crystal clear feedback. And the gathered sitting position supports relaxed touring equally as well as hitting the gas with commitment.

Powerful, state-of-the-art V2

Engine

The Super Duke's water-cooled V-engine with 88 kW (118 hp) sets the benchmark for free-revving twins. Its intelligent design principle with multi-function balancer shaft makes it the lightest and most compact V2 in its class. The engine impresses with explosiveness and spontaneous throttle response.

Cylinder Head

Aside from optimum combustion chamber design, the major factors behind the outstanding performance of the 990 Super Duke's V-twin with 75° cylinder angle are the state-of-the-art four-valve cylinder heads, each with flow-optimised ducts and two overhead camshafts.

Crank drive / Pistons

Particularly lightweight pistons and connecting rods bestow the 990 Super Duke's V2 engine with reduced reciprocating weight and hence a decidedly spontaneous responsiveness, underlining its extremely sporty engine characteristics.

Engine Management

The electronic Keihin engine management system regulates the modern fuel injection system on the 990 Super Duke, focussing on optimum behaviour under partial load and spontaneous responsiveness. In this way, KTM engineers were able to harmonise raw power with optimum rideability.

2011 KTM 690 Duke

Click Thumbnail to download (size 1600 x 1200 pixels)

2011 KTM 690 Duke

Back then, KTM revived the pure, unadulterated single-cylinder motorcycle in the form of the "original" Duke. Judging by the latest 690 Duke that stands before us today, much has been gained: smoothness, room for a pillion passenger, long-distance ability. But what it has never lost is its intensive and elemental ride dynamics. The most modern series production single-cylinder of our times and a precision chassis with a wealth of high-quality components turn every trip on the 690 Duke into an incomparable and unforgettable riding experience.

2011 KTM 690 Duke Features

Polished ride dynamics

Centralisation of masses

The Duke not only impresses with low weight and perfect chassis geometry; the centralisation of masses - for example, by positioning the silencer under the engine - also contributes to its playful handling and razor-sharp precision.

Ergonomics

Thanks to its low weight of less than 150 kg (331 lb.), its first-class chassis and its outstanding brakes, the Duke is a curve-bandit par excellence. The gathered sitting position and freedom of movement behind the ideally angled, wide aluminium handlebars support the perfect control of the vehicle.

Low fuel consumption

Injection / Engine management / Drive-by-wire

The 690 Duke's fuel economy is amazing. Why? Thanks to its low weight of less than 150 kg (331 lb.) and its highly efficient engine management system with electronic injection. And also to its state-of-the-art OHC single-cylinder engine.

Dynamic cornering fun

Frame and swingarm

The Duke's 9 kg (20 lb.) lightweight tubular space frame made from chrome-molybdenum steel and the 4 kg (9 lb.) lightweight, high-quality, pin-jointed, die-cast swingarm impress with extreme levels of torsional stiffness and give rise to excellent tracking stability.

Suspension Elements

Well-equipped for every situation: The Duke's WP upside-down forks with 48 mm (1.89 in) upright tube diameter are adjustable in many ways and the pivot-arm articulated WP pressurised-gas monoshock even features high-speed and low-speed compression adjustment.

Brakes

The Duke's extremely powerful and easily applied Brembo® brakes impress with outstanding controllability. On the front wheel, a radially-mounted, four-piston, fixed brake caliper bites onto a floating 320 mm (12.6 in) brake disc.

Strapping, yet refined single-cylinder

Engine

The 690 Duke's state-of-the-art water-cooled single-cylinder engine with 48 kW (64 hp) and fuel injection combines powerful acceleration from the lowest revs with an outstanding free-revving nature and refined engine running. Its series production anti-hopping clutch prevents rear wheel chatter when changing down.

Balancer Shaft

The finely balanced crank drive of the 690 single-cylinder converts terrific combustion pressure into unrivalled single-power - thanks to its balancer shaft, which eliminates vibration without having any detrimental effect on the life of the super-single.

Injection / Engine management / Drive-by-wire

The electronic engine management system always gets optimum performance out of the ingenious LC4 engine. The "electronic power throttle" also helps in achieving tremendously progressive power development: It ensures that the throttle commands from the rider are translated electronically into the optimum throttle valve opening at all times.
